Dr. Ruth Shook-Orr is a dedicated clinician who works effectively with clients aged 12 years through adulthood. The premise of her work with clients is grounded in supportive therapy that integrates cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior tools, trauma informed practices, and insight-oriented therapy. Ruth seeks to address the unique needs of each client by understanding the impact of presenting stressors and symptoms on their daily life. As the various developmental stages of life present their own unique challenges, additional stress can develop with unexpected changes in relationships, careers, and health. At times when these stressors become overwhelming, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and unresolved trauma unfold.
Ruth’s journey into clinical practice began with a master’s degree in school psychology, where she developed a profound interest in understanding and supporting high school students with mental health challenges in the educational setting. Driven by her passion for making a broader impact on mental health care across all ages, Ruth pursued a doctorate in clinical psychology, expanding her expertise to encompass a wider spectrum of developmental stages and presenting concerns. While pursuing her doctorate degree she trained in community mental health centers, a college counseling center, and culminated her training in a university neuropsychology department and psychiatric facility. Ruth is a lifelong learner who continues to challenge herself by attending training and workshops to further her skills. All of her experiences have fostered a nuanced understanding of addressing mental health issues across different stages of life.
Ruth’s approach to therapy showcases a profound dedication to establishing a strong therapeutic alliance with her clients. Her emphasis on creating a safe and trusting environment where individuals can freely explore the core issues that underlie their emotions and behaviors reflects her understanding of the essential foundation required for effective therapy. Her recognition of the influence of various cultural, religious, and socioeconomic factors on clients’ experiences underscores her awareness of the diverse backgrounds and contexts that shape individuals’ lives. This awareness helps her tailor her therapeutic approach to suit each client’s unique needs and challenges.
With support, exploration, and practice Ruth believes all clients can develop resilience, insight, and acquire the skills necessary to navigate life's challenges more effectively. Ruth believes therapy is a collaborative process and her ability to connect and create rapport fosters an environment that supports clients in addressing challenging topics. As one former client stated: “You have been a wonderful therapist, and I will always have a special place in my heart for you; you saved my life more times than once and I am so grateful to have found a therapist as insightful and honest as you.” This comment reflects Ruth’s dedication to fostering a strong therapeutic alliance, providing valuable insights, and supporting clients through their most challenging times.
